Swallowing

Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that can be caused by neurological diseases, brain injury, stroke, dementia, or head and neck cancer. Additional assessment via imaging may be necessary to help guide treatment.

You may benefit from a swallowing evaluation and treatment if you experience any of the following:

  • Choking, coughing, or throat clearing during or after meals

  • Food or liquid feeling stuck

  • Spilling food or liquid out of the mouth

  • Food or liquid remaining in the mouth (“pocketing”)

  • Feeding tube dependency

  • Modified food or liquid textures

  • Recurring pneumonia
